The Thunderball lottery is another lottery game available to players in the UK. The mechanics of the game are similar to those of the UK Lottery but in this game, you must choose five different numbers between 1 and 39. Also, you’ll pick one “Thunderball” number between 1 and 14.
To win at Thunderball you must match the main numbers, the more numbers you match, the higher the prize. If you match the main numbers AND the Thunderball you get even higher prizes.
The Thunderball lottery offers a top Jackpot prize of £500,000. That’s for matching all five numbers and the Thunderball. Nowadays, the game also pays out a £3 cash prize for matching just the Thunderball; a feature introduced in 2010.
Draws for the Thunderball lottery are televised and broadcast live every Wednesday, Friday & Saturday. To watch live simply tune channel BBC One.
How to Play Thunderball Lotto & The Odds of winning
Since the changes made to the Thunderball Lottery in May 2010, the odds of winnings on some of the combinations improved and some others worsen. So just to be clear on the odds, let see.
One of the changes that impacted the most was the introduction of the £3 prize for matching just the Thunderball. The odds of doing so is 1 in 14, which isn’t bad at all. That certainly increased the number of winners per draw.
The odds of matching one of the main numbers PLUS the Thunderball are 1 to 35 and it pays out a £5 prize; quite close to the odds before the new rules of 1 to 33. The probability of matching two main numbers PLUS the Thunderball are 1 in 135 with a £10 payout.
Matching just three numbers is actually easier with odds of 1 in 111 for a £10 cash prize or 1 in 1,437 for matching three numbers PLUS the Thunderball and take a £20 prize. Matching for main numbers without the Thunderball will win you a £100 prize with odds of 3,647. Add the Thunderball to that and you be £250 richer with odds of 1 in 47,415.
Now if you match five of the main numbers, no bonus ball, you’re looking at a hefty£5,000 cash prize. The odds of hitting these five are one in 620,046. Match all five PLUS the Thunderball and you walk away with the top prize of £500,000!
